The Upper West side Story of New York

New York is always filled with surprises. I was startled to see a strange ancient structure, stifled by the skiescrapers and new tower blocks, as they wandered their streets.

The atmosphere of 33 West 63 is like a sore thumb on the Upper West Side. It is a low-rise block surrounded by giants and the hustle and bustle of the modern life.

This ancient structure is a flash back to a young period when the neighborhood was a vibrant business and residential area, only a step away from the contemporary plazas and music halls of Lincoln Center.

It is a remarkable example of a tenement erected in the 1890’s, and is five storeys high, with unique external fire flowing through its red brick fa├žade.

You can still see where its neighbors were lopped off on both sides and left alone. Today the office building, a parking lot and a little open space flash have crashed.

How was the riddle left behind while the rest was washed away by contemporary developments?

On a nighttime walk across my hotel, The Empire, at 44 West 63rd Street, I spotted this lonely street survival entirely accidentally.
